Comment: I just had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Simmons in November, 2008 at a conference. I purchased his book and he was kind enough to autograph it for me. Usually I get books and throw them on the shelf; however, this time I actually started reading this book on the plane coming home. I couldn't put it down. I don't usually write book reviews for people, but felt compelled to write one for this book. If you want to change your life, if you want to jumpstart your vision, if you want to apply life's lessons that you've heard before but for some reason it didn't sink in.......I strongly suggest you purchase "Do You!" It has inspired me more than I fully realized. Russell Simmons said many things that I've heard before but never fully grasped. I finally "get it" and I'm definitely going to "do me!" Thanks Russell! Comment: For those of us who watched Hip Hip become the groundbreaking, trend setting, multi-billion dollar phenomenon that it is today, one could arguably say that Russell Simmons helped pioneer the movement. Russell Simmons' story is an inspiration to anyone who dares to believe that they can achieve their wildest dreams.

Mr. Simmons doesn't reveal any new concepts, secrets or strategies for becoming successful. Instead, he shows you how he applied 12 tried and true philosophies to become one of the most successful music moguls and entrepreneurs in the world. With his unique blend of business savvy, "street smarts," and a sense of purpose, Do You! illustrates how insight, hard work and perseverance can catapult you to heights you never dreamed imaginable. Do You! is a must read!!

Comment: Overall I enjoyed reading Mr. Russell's book.
The things I agree with him on are stop procrastinating, work hard, focus, and age is just a number. :)

I am skeptical about vegetarianism being healthier lifestyle choice. I think most health problems are caused by other factors except just eating meat. For example whether one is a vegetarian or omnivore if one is eating more calories then one burns one will gain weight. Also, the issue is not just one of eating meat, but how our food is produced. I do agree though one can never go wrong with eating plenty of veggies and fruits. :)

Also, the religion issue he brings up in the book. As atheist/rationalist some of the stuff he talks about sounds too new agey to me, but that is just my opinion. If Mr. Russel is simply talking about god being a metaphore about finding ones inner strength in overcoming obstacles then I have no problems with that. :)

Comment: There are hundreds of books trying to sell a success formula out there, what makes this one stand out?

Intrigued by the background of the author, I picked up the book expecting, if anything, a different perspective on what it takes to climb the ladder of success. But going through the chapters, I was pleasantly surprised to find all the familiar concepts we've heard of in the past, albeit with different and very hands on examples from Russell Simmons' life and upbringing.

The book is written in a conversational and easy to read tone, there are a few repeating and prolonged passages on religion, yoga, and vegetarianism that may not agree with everyone, but an enjoyable read nonetheless. A small warning: watch out for the language in a few places.

Comment: ...and then got preachy, irrelevant and boring. Going on about how bad African immigrants are treated in France. Yes, we know how much better they were treated in the old country. Going on about "reparations." So write a check.
