Editorial Review: Product Description

After conquering the hallowed halls of Harvard Business School, an Italian-American kid from the streets of Brooklyn decides to take on the testosterone-fueled Merc Exchange in lower Manhattan?where billions of dollars in oil money trade hands every week and where fistfights are known to break out on the trading floor.

Soon our hero is living the good life in the gold-lined hotel palaces of Dubai and on private yachts in Monte Carlo, teeming with half-naked girls flown in by Saudi sheikhs, and making deals in the dangerous back alleys of Beijing. But that's only the beginning. Taken under the wing of another young gun and partnering with a mysterious young Muslim, the kid embarks on a dangerous adventure to revolutionize the oil trading industry?and, along with it, the world.

This is a true story.

Average Customer Review: 2.5

Summary: fresh out of HBS and ready to take on anything
Date: 2009-01-08 - 5

Comment: I truly enjoyed the style and layout of this book. The story was inspiring and made me want to get out in the business world and make something happen. Experiencing all the different situations and experiences Nick (John) encountered was captivating. I can understand why some people rated the book low because most likely they aren't a young entrepreneur or person who is really interested in business. I definitely agree with the reviewer who said "For ambitious and driven individuals in their 20s it's an exciting and informative read." If you interested in an entertaining account of a young entrepreneur straight out of HBS and his encounters with the business world I definitely recommend this book.

Summary: Excellent and Captivating
Date: 2008-12-11 - 5

Comment: I absolutely give Rigged 5 stars. I very much enjoyed the style (non-fiction novel). Hearing how Nick and Khaled set up the energy exchange in Dubai was captivating. I'm 24 and hope someday to go to HBS. I am an entrepreneur and investor and have been to Dubai. The book was certainly more 'targeted' to my demographic. Perhaps it allowed me to dream and think just a bit bigger. For ambitious and driven individuals in their 20s it's an exciting and informative read.

Summary: a remedial attempt
Date: 2008-11-05 - 1

Comment: this is a rather lame attempt of writing a fresh story about the trade of oil in Dubai. It is choppy and collge freshman like in its approach. I struggled thru this.

Summary: Love the book, the story is very real
Date: 2008-10-18 - 4

Comment: The storyline is smoothly layed out and very real. Interesting book and I loved the "brining down the house" by this author as well.

Summary: Just slightly better than completely useless
Date: 2008-08-24 - 1

Comment: I picked up this book hoping it might be something on the order of "Liars Poker" or "Barbarians at the Gates" or "The Pay Pal Wars," books that imparted huge amounts of information about the businesses that they covered. Boy, was I ever disappointed.

Mezrich's characters are suitable for comic books, the business concepts he imparts are perhaps the level that would be explained to fourth-graders on a field trip, and the plot is close to non-existent. I'd say his writing is boring but it seldom rises to that level.

I trade futures and FOREX, so I know a bit about markets and finance. Most of the narrative-type business books I have read give me at least one or two important pieces of information about the business itself. What Mezrich imparts about the Merc can be put into a one-page pamphlet.

I was most of the way through this piece of dreck when I realized what the point of this book was-- Mezrich is hoping to land a movie script. He tried to write it simple and shallow enough for Hollywood mogels to understand, and he tried to incorporate glitz and money and sex.

Save your money, save your time-- skip this book. Mr. C.S.
