Summary: Database management with ease
Date: 2008-08-28 -
Comment: I loved, loved, loved this text. I wasn't really thrilled with having to take a database management class but I couldn't have enjoyed this text more. It was clear and thorough with great examples. It is a great foundation book for someone wanting to get their feet wet in database management and all that entails.
Summary: Dry and thorough
Date: 2008-08-07 -
Comment: When I first started reading this book, I almost cried at how dry and boring it was. However, I finally got over that and was able to stay awake long enough to keep up with the readings for my class. Overall, this text book offers a lot of information on database management - from conceptual modeling to SQL DDL and DML to physical schema considerations and data warehousing. I think it is a great intro text for anyone getting into the DBA game. The section on SQL was more in-depth than I thought it would be and even gets into co-related nested queries and working with some useful functions.
Summary: Lots of coverage but hard to read

Comment: This review is for the 9th edition.
On the positive side, this book covers a lot of ground and is very thorough. So kudos to the authors for putting together such a large amount of information in this book. Obviously they have a very good understanding of the subject.
However, I did not find the book easy to read, and I'm trying to determine the reason for that. I think it is because the book has been written in a very factual manner, i.e., it seems to narrate facts after facts.
Some of the best books I have read, are in a story telling format where the authors are such masters of the topic that they will lead the reader on a journey. The authors will gently lead the reader to independently arrive at the conclusion that they always intended. And that's when the reader will have a "wow" moment in deeply understanding the subject.
So while this is a good book providing very relevant, practical and recent information in this field, in my opinion, this book is not one of those where you will have that "wow" moment.

Summary: Not an easy read
Date: 2008-03-17 -
Comment: Our database teacher recommended this book. I bought this book and found it not an easy read. After going through the whole book still I could not understand how the database design process works. Then I went on google to look for some thing easy to understand. I found a book called "Relational database design for starters: Explained through a case study in Microsoft Access" by Akmal Masood. This book is very easy to understand and after finishing the book, I was able to understand how the database design works.
